The Best Free AI Tools for Accountants
Published 30 July 2026
Free tiers in accounting software are usually a trial in disguise. A few are genuinely useful, and they are the sensible place to start if you want to test whether AI helps your practice before committing budget.
Genuinely free, genuinely useful
Ramp gives its entire expense management platform away free — automated categorisation, policy enforcement, receipt matching. It earns money on card interchange rather than software fees, so there is no catch beyond needing to move card spend across.
ChatGPT has a free tier that handles drafting, explanation and formula writing well. Treat every technical answer as a draft to check, and be careful about client data.
Puzzle offers a free tier for very early-stage companies, useful if you serve startups.
Worth a trial rather than a free plan
Most capture and bookkeeping tools — Dext, AutoEntry, Keeper — offer trials rather than free tiers. That is reasonable given their cost base, and a trial is enough to test the accuracy claim on your own documents.
How to test properly
Run the trial on real client work, not a demo file. Take twenty of your messiest documents and see what happens. Vendor accuracy figures are measured on clean inputs; your practice does not have clean inputs.
Measure the time before and after honestly, including the review time the tool creates. A tool that is 90% accurate but needs every entry checked has saved you nothing.
