Dext (formerly Receipt Bank) is the tool most accounting firms reach for first when they want to stop keying in paperwork. Clients photograph receipts or forward invoices by email, and Dext extracts the supplier, date, net, tax and total, then publishes the transaction into the ledger.
What it actually does
The extraction engine has been trained on a very large volume of real accounting documents, which shows on the awkward ones — faded thermal receipts, foreign-language invoices, multi-page statements. It also learns supplier-specific coding rules, so the second invoice from a given supplier usually needs no intervention at all.
Who it suits
Practices running bookkeeping for a portfolio of small clients. The per-client pricing model works in your favour at volume, and the client-facing app is simple enough that non-technical business owners will actually use it.
Where it falls short
It is a capture tool, not a full bookkeeping platform. You still need Xero, QuickBooks or Sage underneath. Firms with only a handful of clients sometimes find the subscription hard to justify against cheaper per-document alternatives.
What we like
- Excellent extraction accuracy on poor-quality documents
- Learns supplier coding rules over time
- Client app drives good document habits
- Deep integrations with Xero, QuickBooks and Sage
What to watch
- Needs a separate ledger platform underneath
- Cost adds up across a large client base
- Occasional manual review still required on unusual formats
