Ramp combines corporate cards with expense management and bill pay, and gives the core product away free — it makes money on interchange rather than subscriptions.

What it actually does

Transactions are categorised automatically as they happen, receipts are matched by SMS or email, and policy rules block or flag out-of-policy spend at the point of purchase rather than at month end. The accounting integrations sync coded transactions into the ledger.

Who it suits

US-based companies and the firms that serve them. For an accounting practice, it removes a lot of the month-end chase for missing receipts.

Where it falls short

It is US-centric — international coverage is far weaker than the domestic product. And because the business model depends on card spend, it is a poor fit for organisations that will not move their spend onto the platform.

What we like

  • Core platform is genuinely free
  • Real-time categorisation and policy enforcement
  • Removes most manual receipt chasing
  • Clean integrations with major ledgers

What to watch

  • Heavily US-focused
  • Requires moving card spend to Ramp
  • Less useful if you only want software, not cards
